Herbert C. Smoot, Jr., 82, passed away Monday, January 17, 2011, at Harrison Memorial Hospital.

He was born February 17, 1928 in Nicholas County to the late Herbert C. & Bernice Jacobs Smoot, was a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean War, a retired employee of Jockey International, a retired farmer and attended the Carlisle Assembly of God Church.

Survivors include 3 sons, Kenneth Smoot, Paris, Steve (Marsha) & Johnny Smoot, Georgetown, 2 daughters, Diane Roser and Betty Jo (Kevin) Booth, Carlisle, 3 brothers, Jimmy (Minnie) Smoot and Bobby Smoot, Carlisle, and Wayne Smoot, Lexington, 3 sisters, Imogene Burke and Brenda (Jilson) Robinson, Carlisle, and Beatrice (Elmer) Davis, Lexington, 6 grandchildren, Brian Smoot, Tiffany Roser, Amy Jones, Jessica Rison, Jennifer Marcum and Trevor Smoot and 4 great-grandchildren, Trevor & Carson Jones and Lindsee & Micah Rison.

He was also preceded in death by his wife, Jeanie Ramey Smoot, a daughter, Marsha Smoot, and 2 sisters, Mary Alice Smoot & Kathleen Bowles.

Services will be 2:00 P.M. Friday January 21, 2011 from the Mathers-Gaunce Funeral Home conducted by Rev. Darrell Sexton and burial with military honors to follow in the Carlisle Cemetery.

Visitation will be after 5:00 P.M. Wednesday.
