Byron Gail Hughes, 91, husband of 65 years to Ruth Halverson Hughes, passed away peacefully in his sleep on January 18, 2018 at Johnson-Mathers Nursing Home.
A native of Franklin, Tennessee, he was born February 12, 1926 to the late Maurice Byron & Elizabeth House Hughes and was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, where he served in the last cavalry regiment. Gail worked for 36 years as farm manager of Forest Retreat Farm in Nicholas County, Kentucky and was well-known in the thoroughbred industry.
Additional survivors include 4 children: Byron G. "Scooter" (Traci) Hughes, of Lexington, David H. (Patti) Hughes, of Mt. Pleasant, South Carolina, Andrew W. "Wick" (Karen) Hughes, of Harrodsburg, and Sarah Elizabeth (Gerry) Hughes, of Versailles; and 4 grandchildren: Kepler Hughes, Ruth Hughes, Sydney Hughes and Byron Gail Hughes, II.
A Celebration of Life will be held at 2:00 P.M. Sunday, March 11, 2018 at the Fasig Tipton Sales Ground, 2400 Newtown Pike, Lexington, Kentucky 40511.
