Carroll Gene Hall, 91, of Versailles, passed away on Sunday, January 15, 2023. He was born September 19, 1931, in Floyd County, Kentucky. At age 15, he graduated from high school and entered Morehead State College, graduating with a degree in Music Education. He served as a member of the 493rd Army Band at Fort Benning, Georgia. Carroll was a band director at several schools in Kentucky, including Carlisle Public School, Nicholas County Public Schools, and Woodford County Public Schools. He worked at Hurst Music in Lexington from 1978 until his passing, visiting and serving band directors and students in central Kentucky schools.
Carroll was a prolific musician. He was bandleader, trombonist, and vocalist for The Bourbonaires for over 40 years. He and his son David played music events together for over 50 years. He also performed with many local area bands. He was a member of the American Federation of Musicians and served on the board of directors for the local 554-635. In 2019, Carroll was honored with a Lifetime Achievement Award by the Lexington Music Awards. In 2022, he was inducted into the Woodford County Public Schools Hall of Fame for his impact on countless students during his career.
Carroll was a passionate gardener. He spent his free time tending to his vegetables, orchard, and flowers. He shared his love of living things with his children and grandchildren. Carroll was a member of the First Christian Church of Versailles.
He is survived by his loving wife, Kay Fisher Hall; his children David Hall (Sharon) and Joanna Sames (Ed); six grandchildren: Melody (Clark) Demasi, Michelle & Matthew Hall, Elizabeth, Rachel, and Nathan (Chelsea) Sames; and one great-grandson, Kayden Hall.
Preceding him in death was a son, Jonathan Fisher Hall.
Visitation will be held on Tuesday, January 17th at First Christian Church of Versailles from 5:00-8:00 P.M. followed by a private graveside service on Wednesday in the Carlisle Cemetery.
