James Allen Murrell Obituary

James Allen Murrell, 69, of Carlisle, Kentucky passed away quietly and peacefully at his home on October 4, 2023 surrounded by his loving family and close friends. He was the loving husband and best friend of Sharon S. Murrell for the past 50 years. Left to cherish his memory are his son and daughter-in-law, Kevin & Debbie Murrell, and granddaughter, Gema Allyse as well as his beloved dog, Bella. Also surviving are his loving brother, Delmus and sister-in-law Kathy Murrell of Carlisle; sister-in-law Lenore Moreland of Cynthiana; and brothers-in-law Billy Joe (Loretta) Scott of Lawton, Oklahoma and Robert C. (Beverly) Scott of Paris. A host of other family members will also miss his presence.

Born in Nicholas County on December 20, 1953, James Allen was a son of the late Eddie Lee & Roberta Ritchie Murrell. James Allen had a zest for living life to the fullest. His smile and laughter were contagious, and he was happy to share them with anyone who was near. He had tireless energy, especially when in community and church projects. A special aunt, Leota, lovingly nicknamed him “Lightnin” to describe his boundless energy. He was involved in many community activities and made it his life’s work to promote love, respect and compassion among his fellow Nicholas Countians as well as his co-workers at IBM. He developed an early interest in photography and was on the sidelines of many school sporting events shooting photos of his son’s classmates. He later would share these photos with the parents of those “kids.” His camera and obligatory “family photo” at family gatherings were often times poorly received among family members, but now those pictures are seen as priceless treasures of the past. He also enjoyed shooting drone videos of local businesses and landmarks in Nicholas County and shared them on social media to promote his hometown. James Allen never met a stranger and was the first to extend his hand of friendship and had no trouble striking up a conversation. He also was the first to lend a helping hand to anyone in need.

James Allen was a member of the Carlisle Christian Church and served many years on the Board. He was a long-standing member of Blue Lick Lodge #495. He spent a 40-year career at IBM, serving in various positions and represented the company as he traveled throughout the US.
